Milk Adulteration: Detecting Species-Specific Proteins by LC/MS

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The adulteration of milk via the addition of low molecular weight compounds, such as melamine for economically motivated fraud, is a well-known concern1. Methods for adulteration detection have been examined extensively using, amongst other tools, LC/MS techniques. Current methods tend to focus on small molecule adulteration; however, large molecule adulteration with other animal or plant proteins is becoming increasingly common and is not yet regulated within the dairy industry.

Species-specific identification of collagen components in Colla corii asini using a nano-liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry proteomics approach

Colla corii asini (CCA) is a protein-based traditional Chinese medicine made from donkey skins. Because it has the ability to nourish blood, its demand is increasing rapidly. The shortage of donkey skins increases the risk of the adulteration of CCA products with other animal skins. To ensure the drug efficacy and safety of CCA products, a proteomics technique was applied to reveal proteins in ...

MALDI-MS and multivariate analysis for the detection and quantification of different milk species.

The extensive consumption of milk and dairy products makes these foodstuffs targets for potential adulteration with financial gains for unscrupulous producers. Such practices must be detected as these can impact negatively on product quality, labelling and even health. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF-MS) is a potentially useful technique, ...

Ruminant Nutrition Symposium: Metabolomics Applications in Dairy Cow Metabolism

An overview is given on mass spectrometry-based metabolomics: past, current, and future developments. Understanding the metabolome is challenging due to the enormous diversity of metabolite structures. Metabolomics uses a range of tools, established as service at the NIH West Coast Metabolomics Center at UC Davis. We here explore the use of ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) in combination with li...

Tandem mass spectrometry for the detection of plant pathogenic fungi and the effects of database composition on protein inferences.

LC-MS/MS has demonstrated potential for detecting plant pathogens. Unlike PCR or ELISA, LC-MS/MS does not require pathogen-specific reagents for the detection of pathogen-specific proteins and peptides. However, the MS/MS approach we and others have explored does require a protein sequence reference database and database-search software to interpret tandem mass spectra. To evaluate the limitati...

Investigation of Goats’ Milk Adulteration with Cows’ Milk by PCR

Goats’ milk adulteration with cows’ milk is becoming a big problem. In the past, the urea-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis assay with different motility of αS1-casein has been applied for the identification of cows’ milk adulteration. The detection sensitivity is 1.0%. The aim of this study was to develop a faster and more sensitive method to detect cows’ milk which may be present in adultera...
